Whew! Our first day in NYC was a busy one. The kids were greeted this morning by Mrs. Lehault, who visited us by taking the train in from New Jersey. Starting off with a packed breakfast, the day moved on from there. Our guide, Dennis, met us at the hotel and we took of downtown to wait for the ferry. And wait we did.
The boat ride was a bit blistery, but circled us around Liberty Island for some great shots of the statue. It was then onto Ellis Island. Mrs. McMahon tried to get some students to pretend they were immigrants coming to the US, but no one seemed to enjoy the game. Dennis gave us lots of history about the immigration process and the island’s use. The students were able to search for their ancestors on the wall, and several found their last names. Did you know there were so many Johnsons? After visiting Ellis, we got back on the ferry for a ride back to Manhattan.
It was already lunchtime by the time we got back on the bus, so we headed to the South Street Seaport. But, not without swinging by Wall Street. Once at the SSS, the students dined in full food court style, while the Pink Lady chaperones (plus one) headed to an authentic NY pizza shop.
Darnell picked us up, and we headed back to the business district. We visited the site of Ground Zero, and were amazed at how quickly things are moving with the restoration of the area. The students got a view of where the buildings stood, and learned what the plans are for the future. We also saw a touching teardrop memorial.
Amazingly the day was flying by, so we headed back towards the hotel by way of Chinatown, Little Italy, and SoHo. Although these were just drive-by’s, the students got a taste of what life in each section of town is like.
We came back to the hotel, changed, and met again for dinner and the show. After just a few blocks of walking, we got to Planet Hollywood, where we dined among movie memorabilia. We then bustled down to the theater to wait in an orderly fashion. When the theater doors opened, we were ready. We had amazing center seats for the performance of Grease. It was full of enthusiastic entertainment, and the kids seemed to get into it. The chaperones certainly did!
New York spring weather met us outside the door, as we hurried to the center of Times Square for the annual group photo. It’s amazing how Kevin was able to squeeze us all in. One final trip across the street and down to the hotel. The students are tucked away in their beds…or, at least their rooms. Mrs. McMahon and I are about to turn in for the night, in order to be bright-eyed for our last day in the city.
I won’t have a chance to blog about our last day until Saturday morning, so I apologize. Can’t wait to see everyone at the airport!!
