Here we go again!
Today seemed to be a slower day, with much time on our bus, but still we didn't stop. There was a problem with our bus' DVD player, so no movies on the way to Gettysburg. This worked out well, though, as it gave the kids a little more time to sleep on our 1 1/2 hour drive.
Once there, we met our guide, Mike, and went on the battlefield tour. We saw battle sites, touched cannons, and climbed atop Little Round Hill. Mike was impressed with our group..."they ask really good questions and have lots of knowledge." So, they all better ace their Civil War tests in Social Studies this year! Following our tour, we gave the kids a little bathroom break (watch out for Sean in the girls' room!) and then onto lunch.
The kids were so excited to get a "home cooked" meal for lunch. I tried to make sure there was some form of a vegetable on thier plates. And, again, PVIS students showed their manners, as the workers made it a point to comment on their politeness.
We boarded the bus again to head back to DC. This time they were wide awake. Julia kept us entertained by her rendition of "I Will Survive." Impromptu kareoke ensued with Disney tunes and the Spanish Alphabet song (thanks Sra. Feldman!)
We finished our DC days in the Holocaust Museum. All seemed touched by what they saw. We had a real taste of DC traffic this evening en route to the White House. We did our normal photo stop, then back on the bus. Again, we hit crazy traffic on our way to the game.
After several ramps, we found our seats in RFK stadium, but just a little early. The kids immediately hit the food vendors for the Nationals' version of a Dodger Dog. Haley got herself a ball from some players too! The food may have been one of the most entertaining aspects of the game, as the Nationals took a beating from the Marlins. Most kept themselves occupied...watching, listening, and playing. We decided to head back to our hotel...but not until after we joined in on "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
We then took the short ride back to our hotel, where, once again, the students have been tucked away for the night.
See ya in NYC!

Sorry folks! There was some technical difficulties last night and early this morning, so I couldn't update ya'll until today. I'll do two entries today...let's share Tuesday's events.
Tuesday began with our first breakfast at the hotel. Parents, trust me, they ate better than the McFlurries from Monday. Some coughs and colds moved in overnight, and we had to make sure everyone was in good walking condition. So, we started off our day with a trip to not one, but two, CVS's.
We traveled to the Capitol building, where the students got their first DC protesting experience. I'll let them share the topic with you. We continued our walk around to the Supreme Court, where the students had the opportunity to take pictures with the security guards. We were able to see the Library of Congress...but, couldn't go in. Those Harry Potter books will have to wait until the next trip.
From there, it was onto Arlington. Thank goodness Darnell (our driver) knew the in's and out's of the cemetary. Kudos to the kids for keeping up with him and my long legs! We had the chance to visit all the sites listed, including the laying of a wreath at Audie Murphy's grave. Our 5 mile trek worked up an appetite.
We went into Old Town Alexandria for a quick lunch, then it was onto Mount Vernon. The kids decided to not wait the 90minutes to tour the house, so we bypassed the actual rooms, and saw all the outside sites. After some photos of the tombs and sheep, we boarded the bus and hightailed it back over to the Air and Space Museum for an IMAX movie.
The kids got another vote (don't let them tell you I MADE them do everythihg). They chose to do the remaining monuments prior to dinner, so we squeezed in the FDR and Jefferson memorial.
It was onto the mall for dinner, then back to the hotel for a DJ Dance Party. They kids mingled with friends from Ridgecrest and two other schools. Mrs. McMahon kept them entertianed with her old school dance moves.
I finished the evening with one last trip to CVS, then tucked the children into bed...
Onto the next adventure...

Day One (and 2) is Done!
|
|
The day began at 3:30pm on Saturday, when not two, but three buses arrived at PVIS to take us to the airport. All was situated, and the kids loaded and were ready to go. Each chaperone was given an 80's movie theme...and rooms assigned accordingly. Jim's group took on Back to the Future, Theresa's went with Goonies. Mrs. McMahon's Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and my Pink Ladies and T-Birds of Grease.
Bus 1 jammed to the sweet sounds of Journey, while Bus 2 kept themselves entertained. John Wayne was pretty ready for our crew, check-in ran smoothly...with the exception of Mrs. McMahon being reprimanded by the security officers. The Spirit Stick (see picture) debuted at McDonald's, then took the trip down the walkway. S/he accompanied Kaitlin into the cockpit, where both met Captain Dave Debear. Once the kids were settled, we were able to take off. We were all serrenaded by Nikky and crew over the announcenments. Thanks girls!
After landing in Denver, the kids kept themselves entertained by riding the escalator. Our comments about trying to get some sleep on the flight were not headed, and there were plenty of groggy eyes when we landed in DC.
A delicious morning breakfast (ask about McFlurries and Apple Pies) at McDonald's awaited us. Then, it was onto Ford's Theater. After waiting for over an hour...in the chilly air...and long line...without a bathroom...(insert next whine here)...we were able to enter the theater. You could tell the lack of sleep caught up to us, as the heads and eyelids began dropping when the NP ranger began speaking. It was then onto the monument tour.
They seemed to wake up a bit when we hit the monument tour and brisk East Coast air. The Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and finally, the Vietnam Memorial. Stomaches were growling by the time we finished, so we decided to let them get some food in their systems. We finished our LONG, TIRING day with a tour of both the Air and Space Museum and the Natural History Museum.
There was no doubt the kids (and adults) were ready to head to our hotel for some down time. Pizza and salads greeted us, along with a very special birthday treat to our two 14 year olds, Chris and Chris. I just finished pool duty in which a lively game of Marco Polo entailed.
Off to do the room checks, as a 6:30 wake up call will be coming early tomorrow morning. Until then...
